What the Wright County Time Machine does

Pick any address, farm, or lake place in Wright County and slide between aerial photos from 1940 to today (the 1940 photos cover the Buffalo area so far, and 1953 covers the whole county). You can see when a house went up, when the trees came down, how a shoreline changed, or what a field looked like before the neighborhood moved in.

Click a spot for more

Click anywhere on the map and a card tells you what's underfoot: scanned historic aerial photos of that spot, the soil and what it means for septic systems, basements, and gardens, and, on a lakeshore, when and where the sun sets. Tick the “Property lines” box at the top right of the map to draw current lot lines over any year's photo, then click a lot to see its address, size, and the county's estimated value.

Where the information comes from

The modern photos are from USGS and the USDA's NAIP program, served by the Minnesota Geospatial Information Office. The older scanned photos come from the University of Minnesota's historical aerial photo library. Soil information is from the USDA soil survey, and lake outlines are from the Minnesota DNR. Property lines and values are from Wright County GIS and update nightly. None of it replaces a survey, an inspection, or an on-site septic evaluation.
